Lent: I am, simply

Who are you then?... I am only someone shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord!' John 1:21,23

Woman with a pink, Rembrandt

Ask the world to reveal its quietude - not the silence of machines when they are still, but the true quiet by which birdsongs, trees, belworts, snails, clouds, storms become what they are, and are nothing else. Wendell Berry, Sabbaths 2001 III

Who am I? I am, simply

In Rembrandt's painting Woman with a pink and in John the Baptist's response to the question Who are you? ('I am only') we discern simplicity and clarity which is shorn of camouflage, understatement or exaggeration.

As I listen within me to this question Who am I? what do I hear or see?

Is there a prayer or action that emerges?
